Air Gaps prevent stormwater backflow from entering your rainwater tank and lowering your water quality.

If there is a stormwater backup, water can flow up your overflow pipe.  Having the physical break in the air gap means that this contaminated water cannot make the jump into your tank. It will instead flow out of the opening. Think of it as the circuit breaker for your tank!
